The Winding Road to Hana, Maui

The road to Hana was all we had planned for today. It wasn't about the destination, but the journey. Spanning the north east shore of Maui, the legendary highway snakes between rugged cliffs and 54 one-lane bridges. We enjoyed three hours of the scenic coastal drive which was about halfway to the little town of Hana. Yes, it takes a while with all the hairpin turns and stops. Pictures and words cannot do it justice. But after the twists and ascents/descents, yielding to big trucks, hiking, swimming holes, waterfall photos, and lookout points, we had enough fun and turned around to do it all over again. There is no real loop to return, really, unless you want to take a (sometimes) dirt path for the same distance along the southern coast of Maui.
Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous. Now I understand why the rich and famous have houses here. No, I haven't seen any famous people yet.  Nor do I care much...but if you are interested, Oprah Winfrey, Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Clint Eastwood, Steven Tyler, and many others call Maui home.
We surprised Jackson with stop at a shave(d) ice place on the way home. I ordered a Haleakala Sunrise with vanilla ice cream in the middle. It's a very smooth snow cone with pineapple, mango and guava flavored syrups poured across the top--yum!
