Night Vision: Hawaii Volcanoes Park

We decided the best way to view the lava was to rent some bikes and trek 4 miles to the ocean. A bit scary walking over the glassy sharp rocks as it was getting dark, but we had flashlights plus the park ranger was there talking to everyone.  Added bonus: we found Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory along the hour's drive to the ocean side of the park. Yesss! These pictures of the burning lava hitting the water do not do justice to the awesomeness of the view (if that's even a word)! On the very dark and dusty 4 mile bike ride back to the car, I felt like every star in the sky was out.
We got rained out doing this hike along Devastation Trail. The 16 earthquakes and subsequent lava flow covered this large tract of land in 1959.

View from Volcano House. One can stay at this hotel, which overlooks the park.
Looks like the mascot had too many Pina Coladas...
Pahoa Fresh Fish: my vote for dumpiest place with the best fish and chips I've eaten anywhere. Ever.
Macadamia nut trees lined the three mile drive to the Mauna Loa factory.
This is as close as one is allowed to view the lava flow. The ranger told us the lava hitting the salt water produces hydrochloric acid.
Sunset on another outstanding day
