Day 5: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Last night we went to bed pretty early. I was glad to be in a dark room.  Jackson's room (the living room, really) was so bright, you could land a plane in it.
I woke up to a rainforest-dewy kind of a morning, needing a jacket as it was around 50 degrees.  Chris was bored and awake at 4 a.m. so he went back to the Jaggar viewing area and took some great photos of the glowing lava lake.  Breakfast consisted of homemade fruit bread, fresh papaya, and bananas.  Trying to avoid the possible thunderstorms around, we started hiking the Kiluea Iki lavafield.
The 5 mile hike spanned across what looked like a smooth black wasteland, at least from the parking area. But as we hiked down into the rainforest and then onto the lava, the closeup view was different.  As one walked across, it seemed as though you were surrounded by asphalt broken up into the air, some of the piles a couple of stories tall.  Steam escaped out some of the piles.
The loop took about 2.5 hours to hike. Then we found the Thurston Lava Tube.  This was similar to a cave you walk through.
Before sunset we are going to ride bikes to the end of the land, where the lava meets the ocean. That should be quite a sight!
