On to the Big Island and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

We left an hour late, but arrived into Kona Airport at a relatively early 10 a.m. The first plane had a problem with the black box, a very important item I'm sure.

The view of a Oahu during departure:
We started driving south from the Kona area along the coast and made a few stops before Volcano which is the name of the town we are staying in the next two nights. First was Kahalu'u beach park where we saw some beautiful turtles. We took a tour of Greenwell Farms where they grow the famous Kona coffee along with macadamias, various fruits, and peppercorns. We then started driving around the southern curve of the Big Island stopping at Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. There were more turtles here and they are a protected species on the island. The grains of sand were more like little black glass pebbles and Chris braved the cold water by taking a quick swim. I was content with just taking pictures.
Around 3:00 we pulled into Hale Ohia Cottages. We are staying in the main house, built in the 1930s.  Fresh baked banana bread and sliced papaya greeted us.  Jackson enjoyed practicing some parkour off the railing...
The innkeeper recommended the Tuk Tuk thai food truck--what a great choice for dinner. Afterward, we headed over to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Although the visitor center was closed, we were able to view the steam vents and go to the Jaggar Museum. There is a viewing area of Kilauea Caldera and inside the crater is a glowing lava pool. We stayed until sunset and took some great pictures. Looking forward to spending more time in the park all day tomorrow.
