Mauna Kea and Kamehameha

Today was our last day in the Big Island of Hawaii.  We visited the sacred Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site in the morning. This is the birthplace of Kamehameha and the temple where human sacrifices were made.  It is in a very remote and beautiful spot in the northern part of the island.  The wind must have been 30 mph and it was dry and dusty.  I think we bottomed out a couple of times and probably broke something under the car...
Around lunchtime we hiked down Polulu to the black sand beach. Swimming was not allowed. The water looked treacherous and the hike back up the hill/rocks was the same. Kohala Burgers and Tacos was divine, and I enjoyed a pineapple whip to drink. Jackson is sick of the "Watch me whip...watch me Nene" jokes. The state bird is the nene.
After relaxing for a couple of hours at the hotel pool, we drove out to Mauna Kea for their stargazing program at sunset.  The observatory is the highest in the world, and I felt like I could see all the stars in the sky. The grad students from University of Hawaii set up telescopes and we could view Jupiter through one of them! Added bonus: the temperature was around 40 degrees.
The Big Island was just awesome. We leave for Maui in the morning.
