Full flowery day in fabulous Fairbanks

While I waited for Chris and Jackson doing their dad and son mountain biking for a couple of hours (uphill...no thanks), I did some serious research on other things to do here. Pretty, though. It looks easier than it was, apparently:
When we arrived into Fairbanks, I thought it seemed similar to my first impression of Anchorage...very dingy, lots of strip malls, not very green, and kind of worn looking. For example, check out the welcome sign:
But just as I'd like to give Anchorage another look someday, I looked for the good things about Fairbanks. One of the highlights of the town is the University of Alaska campus. There are many museums surrounding their research, including the botanical garden and Large Animal Research Center. So once the boys got their fill, that's exactly where we went.

My dad was from a farming family, if you didn't know.
Baby musk ox named Princess Leia. The new animals this Spring were given names from Star Wars.
A recent graduate took us around for over an hour, explaining the mission of the center, to maintain the musk ox and caribou populations throughout Alaska, as well as a plethora of interesting info that naturalists know.

Showing us how hair is removed and spun in order to make super soft knitted garments.
Large veggies, not even as big as they will get later in the summer!

 Peonies everywhere...
We all tried the hedge maze. Jackson was nice enough not to leave us. I doubt I would have made it out.

We were headed toward 4.00 by this time, and Chris wanted to try the HooDoo Brewing Company (see Bryce Canyon summer blog for description of hoodoo!). Delicious stout for me and an interesting amber beer with smoky flavor for Chris.
No root beer for Jackson this time, but this was not a restaurant, so we didn't stay long. Our day ended on a high note when we found a hole-in-the-wall dive downtown Eastern Treats--Mediterranean food we found on Yelp! Hooray for another unforgettable day!
